App title and keyword field checker

Paste your App Store title, subtitle and keyword field, or your Google Play title and short description. You get the character count for each field, the words you are paying for twice, and a cleaner keyword field you can copy. It all runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves this page.

Want to know if the change worked?

ASOClimb tracks where your app actually ranks for each keyword, every day, in every storefront you pick. One app is free, no card.

The limits this checker uses

On the App Store you get 30 characters for the app name, 30 for the subtitle and 100 for the keyword field. On Google Play you get 30 characters for the title and 80 for the short description. Characters are counted the way the stores count them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.

Why repeating a word on the App Store is wasted space

Apple reads the title, the subtitle and the keyword field together and combines words across them. A word that is already in your title does not get stronger when you put it in the keyword field again. It just costs you characters that could hold a word you do not rank for yet. The same goes for having both "timer" and "timers": one form is enough.

Words that do nothing for you

Words like "app", "free", "iphone" or "best" rarely help. They describe almost every listing in the store, so they seldom bring you a search you would not get anyway. Spaces after commas in the keyword field are another quiet leak: Apple splits on commas, so "sleep, timer" spends one more character than "sleep, timer" for the same result.

Google Play works a bit differently

Google Play has no keyword field. It reads your title, short description and full description, and it is stricter about keyword stuffing. Repeating a word between the title and the short description is not a mistake there, but each repeat is space that a second keyword could have used.

Questions people ask

How long can an App Store app name be?

The App Store app name, which most people call the title, can be up to 30 characters. The subtitle is also 30 characters and the keyword field is 100 characters.

How long can a Google Play title and short description be?

The Google Play title can be up to 30 characters and the short description up to 80 characters. The full description can be up to 4,000 characters.

Should I repeat my title words in the keyword field?

No. Apple combines the words in your title, subtitle and keyword field, so a word only needs to appear once. Repeating it uses characters without adding a new search you can show up for.

Do I need spaces after commas in the App Store keyword field?

No. Apple splits the keyword field on commas, so a space after a comma is a wasted character. Write "sleep, timer, noise" rather than "sleep, timer, noise".

Is anything I type saved or sent to ASOClimb?

No. The checker runs entirely in your browser. There is no form submission and no request to our servers with your text, and nothing is stored.

Does a clean keyword field mean I will rank?

No. This checker tells you whether your characters are being spent well. Whether you rank for a word depends on competition and on how people respond to your listing, which only tracking real ranks over time will show you.
